Preparing for the exam

Applications Open: Usually in February, 2025 Applications Close: Usually in May, 2025

The exam is scheduled in mid June for entry into next year’s class.

The Selective School Entrance exam consists of two modules, with a break of 15 minutes between the modules –

The Ability tests - which consists of

  • Verbal Reasoning (multiple choice, 30 minutes)
  • Numerical Reasoning (multiple choice, 30 minutes)

The Achievement tests - which consists of

  • Reading Comprehension (multiple choice, 30 minutes)
  • Mathematics (multiple choice, 30 minutes)
  • Persuasive or Creative Writing (15 minutes writing, no additional reading time)

In total, a student has to appear for five tests and the examination takes approximately three hours to complete.

Yes, practice tests are available on the Victorian State Government’s Education and training website. They can be found here - available here.
These practice tests cover all the six test areas, including verbal reasoning, numerical reasoning, reading comprehension, mathematics, creative writing and persuasive writing. The practice test should take about three hours to complete.

While going through some practice tests will help, mentioned below are some other things that can help prepare your child and calm them ahead of the exam:

  • ensure that your child has a good night’s sleep
  • refrain from placing undue pressure on your child to perform as this may lead to anxiety and affect their performance during the test
  • try and stay relaxed, so your child too can be at ease while going for the test
  • ensure that you and your child have realistic expectations from their performance and there is no unnecessary pressure

Many students end up answering only half the questions correctly. Sometimes students are unable to finish the tests as well. Please do remember that these tests are designed to determine high ability and high-achieving students.

Students must bring a photo ID to the exam, such as:

  • A student card issued by the current school
  • A current student travel card
  • A recent class photograph (with the student and his/her name clearly shown)
  • A recent passport
  • A current library card (with photograph)
  • A photo that has been signed by the student’s school and has the school stamp

Offers for all four selective schools are generally sent out via email from mid August. Late offers may sometimes continue until November. Reports on your child’s performance will be sent in August. All offers will contain instructions about how to accept by the closing date provided. Responses must be sent to the selective entry unit, not to individual schools.

An opportunity to sit the entry test in Year 8 is only available once to students. However, each of the selective schools offer limited entry through vacant positions in Year 10 and 11.

Parents must visit the individual school websites each year to find out about testing dates.
